There were two different stances on the subject of slavery, you were either pro-slavery or Anti-slavery. However, both the confederates and the union had benefited from it. People might think that the northern states were totally against slavery but they really need slaves to make an economic success.
Some people that were pro-slavery were people like john Taylor who was part Virginias legislator who had Inherited thirteen slaves and made no laws about prohibiting slavery. John Calhoun who is known for supporting, slavery and was considered a symbol of the Old South. he Owns dozens of slaves that he used their labor to become rich a says that slavery is not a necessary evil but was a positive good. Jefferson Davis was born in Kentucky graduated from west point, won election house of representative and was given the Rosemont plantation where he had kept is slaves to work.
There were also many people that were totally against slavery and wanted to help and abolish slavery all together. Fredrick dougless was born into slavery and ran away at 20. He could read and write and acted by helping free other slaved people. He also helped create the thirteenth amendment to abolish slavery. William lord gilbson wanted radical change he was friends with Fredrick douglous and challenged what was forced vs paid labor. John Quincy Adams thought that slavery was deaminizing despite opposing a 1777 bill in Massachusetts to emancipate slaves, opposed slavery on principle and considered the practice of slavery abhorrent.
